Developing an integrated plan for Pncima has the support of many:
FIRST NATIONS – Coastal First Nations and Fisheries and Oceans Canada have signed an agreement to formally work together to develop a comprehensive marine plan for Pncima. See Memorandum of Understanding.
LOCAL COMMUNITIES – Hundreds of communities in BC came together and passed a resolution at the recent Convention urging the Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia to immediately commit to increased engagement and collaboration in an integrated Oceans Management Planning Process for Pncima. Click to read resolution on Pncima from the 2008 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) meeting.
BC PUBLIC – New opinion polling research has revealed that the BC public is not only in support of enhanced government action to protect the ocean, but that they are demanding it. Click to read press release on polling.
POLICY, LEGISLATION & MANDATE - Canada’s Federal Oceans Act, 1997, was the world’s first comprehensive oceans legislation ever passed. Integrated management, defined in the Act, is a modern way of managing our oceans and protecting our ocean-based economies. Pncima has been identified as the pilot project for the Pacific Coast of Canada. Click to see Oceans Act.
