First Nations
First Nations people have lived on the shores of Pacific North Coast since time immemorial. For thousands of years, First Nations carefully managed the natural resources in the sea and on the land based on their traditional knowledge of harvesting a wide variety of resources without harming or depleting them. Incorporating the interests and traditional knowledge is essential to the success of a marine-use plan in Pacific North Coast waters.
Currently, the Nanwakolas Council, Coastal First Nations and North Coast-Skeena First Nations are developing detailed plans for their traditional waters. They are also actively involved in planning along the coast through the Marine Planning Partnership (MaPP) with the Province of British Columbia.
