Management
Because the connections between the various components of the marine ecosystem and between the various uses and activities are complex, making management decisions without considering the big picture simply won’t work to keep our oceans healthy.
Uncoordinated decisions are currently undertaken in a way that has in some cases resulted in inefficient, redundant, and ineffective resource management. The end result in many instances has been environmental degradation and conflict among uses and user groups.
By working together, engaging in dialogue and considering all values, it is possible to develop a management and conservation plan for Canada's North Pacific Coast that includes tangible benefits for the ecosystem and for those who use the region’s resources. This approach will allow us to pursue social, cultural, spiritual, and economic sustenance while respecting the limits of a healthy and resilient ecosystem.
This means managing human activities using an ecosystem-based approach, and establishing a network of marine protected areas to act as reservoirs for the oceans productivity.
