First Nations people have lived on the shores of Pncima since time immemorial. For thousands of years First Nations carefully managed the abundance of natural resources in the sea and on the land by relying on their knowledge of seasonal cycles to harvest a wide variety of resources without harming or depleting them.
Including the interests of First Nations and their traditional knowledge is essential to the success of a marine-use plan in Pncima. In December 2008, coastal First Nations and Fisheries and Oceans Canada signed a shared governance agreement which formally initiated planning in Pncima.
