Current Management in Pncima

Pncima is a complex system that supports many uses and interests, including: fisheries, tourism, protected areas, harbours and shipping lanes, shellfish harvesting, transportation, aquaculture, scientific research and wildlife habitat. Traditionally, these activities and environments have been addressed in separate plans, administered by separate government departments despite the interconnection between resources and ecosystems.

Regrettably, the people who live and work in this large ocean area and who hold expert knowledge about Pncima - First Nations and the stakeholders - have not been appropriately consulted in the past. But with the MOU between First Nations and the federal government, First Nations are taking their rightful place as governments.  And with the launch of the planning process, consultation of stakeholders should begin.
Many of these stakeholder views are contained in the following report: Coastal Community and Expert Views on Oceans Issues and Marine Use Planning in British Columbia.

Various regulations, needs, and interests are sometimes in conflict. No one has been working on the entire Pncima picture. Up until now there has been no integrated plan. It’s time to improve our approach to management. It’s time for an integrated plan for Pncima.
